The Introduction and a Little More

June 29, 2009

From the Desk of Charlie Race

The Introduction and a Little More

In 1991 I was introduced to the world of professional wrestling. Up until this point I had no interest in wrestling or any “real” sport either (note: I obviously hold pro wrestling in higher regards than “real sports”, just wanted to clarify that). Anyway, one night while staying at a friend’s house, Saturday Night’s Main Event was on TV. My friend was a wrestling fan and made me sit through this stuff I didn’t know about. Upon watching it, something drew me in, as it did to all of us. It was a 20 man over the top battle royal, in 1991. A lot of our childhood favorites were in this match. Hulk Hogan. Jake the Snake. Earthquake. Greg Valentine. Haku. And the man who would go on to win the battle royal: Mr. Perfect. Something about this match piqued my interest, and I had to look into this whole “wrestling thing”.
The following weekend I checked it out on TV and was hooked. Something about the characters, the stories, and just the athleticism in the ring had me hooked and hooked BIG time. He we are 18 years later, still enjoying it, no matter how much things have changed.

18 years after becoming a fan, I am finally getting to do something every wrestling fan should get to do: attending NWA Legends Fanfest in Charlotte, NC. I believe this is the 8th annual NWA Fanfest and each year they do huge things for this event. This year will see legends such as Harley Race, Abdullah the Butcher, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson, Barry Windham, JJ Dillon and many, many more guys (for more info go to nwalegends.com) in addition to the many vendor guests being brought in (including Kevin Nash, Steiners, Steve Corino, Bob Backlund, Danny Hodge, and WAY more!)

After deciding to attend this event, I got inspired. Let’s just say that I have a rather large collection of wrestling DVDs from many different eras and from all sorts of promotions. I decided to take a stroll down the path of pro-wrestling history. After compiling a very lengthy list of all of my titles, I put them in chronological order and have begun watching them (in order) from the beginning. My journey starts in 1957 in Japan and I will work my way up to present day wrestling. My next column will go a little into depth on what I am seeing. Let me just say this: 1950s/60s, Lou Thesz, Rikidozan, Freddie Blassie (no, not a three way match…but how cool would that have been!!??)

Possible TNA King Of The Mountain Spoiler for Tonights PPV

June 21, 2009

**info from wrestlezone.com**

Author:  Bill Behrens

I’m hearing a “Creative Team” rumor  that Samoa Joe will win the King Of The Mountain Main Event match at tonight’s TNA Slammiversary PPV, and that a heel turn may be in the works for him.

Both Samoa Joe and AJ Styles go into the match with recent injuries, but both have been off events for several weeks so I am expecting their usual strong performances.

This is AJ Styles’ 4th KING OF THE MOUNTAIN MATCH, the most of anyone in TNA history, yet he has never been booked to win the match

Jeff Jarrett has been in two previous KING OF THE MOUNTAIN MATCHES, winning both.

Both Samoa Joe & Kurt Angle have appeared in one previous KING OF THE MOUNTAIN match each

This is Mick Foley’s 1st KING OF THE MOUNTAIN Match
